Thanksgiving Turkey

Happy Thanksgiving everybody!  While gobbling up your turkey this year make sure to be thankful for good health and everything that contributes to good health.  Turkey, for example, is something to be grateful for.  There are plenty of health benefits to eating turkey.  Here are just a few:

  • Turkey is high in protein which helps maintain lean muscle mass and regulates the body’s insulin levels
  • Eating a high protein meal helps the body feel full for a longer amount of time than a low protein meal
  • It is low in fat (after removing the skin)
  • It contains less cholesterol than pork, beef, and chicken
  • It’s a good source of the trace mineral selenium which can lower than incidence of cancer
  • It contains tryptophan which increases the production of serotonin (our HAPPY hormone) which in turn increases our mood, so turkeys really do make us happy!
  • It contains vitamin B6 and niacin which helps convert proteins, fats, and carbohydrates into usable energy for our bodies
  • It helps lower LDL which is the bad form of cholesterol
